Advanced Ear Endoscopy for Dogs and Cats in Nicosia
With a small endoscope and camera we can see deep inside the ear, all the way to the eardrum. This lets us remove grass seeds safely and treat stubborn ear infections properly.

What is advanced otoscopy?
The ear canal of a dog or cat is long and has a bend, so a simple otoscope cannot always see all the way down. With advanced otoscopy we use a small endoscope with a camera that shows a magnified image on a screen.
This lets us clearly see the whole canal and the eardrum, and work inside the ear with tiny instruments under direct view.
When your pet needs it
- Grass seeds. They are very common in Cyprus in spring and early summer, when the grass dries.
- Long-term or repeated ear infections that do not clear with the usual drops.
- Foreign bodies or hard wax deep in the ear.
- When we need to check whether the eardrum is intact.
- When samples are needed from deep in the ear for testing.
Signs to watch for
- Sudden head shaking, especially after a walk
- Scratching at the ear or rubbing the head on the floor
- Holding the head tilted to one side
- A bad smell, redness or discharge from the ear
- Pain when you touch the ear
How it works at our clinic
- First examination. We examine your pet and their ears and explain what we suggest.
- Sedation or anaesthesia. For a full and safe examination, pets often need sedation or a general anaesthetic, so they feel no pain and stay still.
- Endoscopy. We examine the whole ear canal and eardrum on the screen.
- Treatment. We remove the grass seed or foreign body with tiny forceps, clean the ear and take samples when needed.
- Afterwards. We give you instructions for treatment at home and book a re-check if needed.
How to protect the ears
- Check the ears after every walk, especially in spring and summer
- Avoid long, dry grass when you can
- Trim the fur around the ears of long-haired dogs, such as spaniels
- Do not push cotton buds deep into the ear, because they push wax further in
- Clean the ears only as we show you and with a product we recommend
If your pet has ear infections often, there may be a cause behind them, such as an allergy. We will look for it together, so it comes back less often.
Why it matters
A grass seed only moves inwards. If it stays in the ear, it can cause inflammation, pierce the eardrum or travel deeper. With endoscopy we can usually find it and remove it whole. For long-term ear infections, a clear view of the ear helps us find the cause and choose the right treatment, instead of trying drops blindly.
Frequently asked questions
Does ear endoscopy need sedation?
Often, yes. For a full and safe examination, especially when the ear is painful or a grass seed is present, sedation or a general anaesthetic is needed. We will explain what suits your pet.
Should I put drops in if my dog shakes their head?
Not before we see them. If there is a grass seed or a damaged eardrum, some drops can do harm.
How quickly should I come if I suspect a grass seed?
As soon as you can. A grass seed only moves inwards and can reach or even pierce the eardrum.
Does it help with long-term ear infections?
Yes. We can see the whole ear canal and eardrum, take samples for testing and clean the ear properly, so treatment works better.
Can cats have it too?
Yes, we examine both dogs and cats. We adapt the procedure to your pet's size and needs.
